How many of us have been on organised walks or trekking in groups only to find that it either becomes a race from A to B or they spend to much time explaining something that you are not interested in. When I am trekking or mountain biking l love to take my time and stop to take photos of interesting things or rare flowers, climbing down a ravine or valley to explore in depth, but in groups it’s always “come on” we need to be at a point at a specific time or because a massive lunch is ready, which I can do without because the whole point of this pastime is to stay fit. Anyway I really enjoy my own company sometimes if not most of the time, but its always nice to have company especially if you have the same interests. In fact I actually enjoy it when I have someone staying at my apartment and they ask me if I can point them in the right direction or even accompany them! This makes me feel kind of important so I do this for free because I like to and I have made many long standing friendships from many countries by taking them to my favorite places that they may not have seen on there own. These days many people take holidays exploring on there own, so its nice if I can help out. During the coldest months in Sardinia I am usually on my own with my best friend Milo my German Shepherd when I say coldest months its not that cold really, not because I’m a die hard but the winters are generally mild compared to the north of Europe. February is probably the coldest month and even snow on the mountains, but it doesn’t last long normally, then I don’t mind the cold if you wrap up and keep on the move. I can safely say that this side of Christmas which is from September to January it is perfect for trekking, mountain biking, with temperatures stay between 12° to 18° in the daytime with the odd day like today which is cold from the north wind which is blowing outside so will plummet to 5 or 6° tonight, so I have lit the wood burner to keep us warm and bought some pastry to make a nice pizza for dinner to accompany the wine.
Tomorrow I was supposed to be trekking with a friend, but for him (being Italian) its to cold, so as long as its not raining I will go with Milo for a morning trek and maybe look for mushrooms in the forest of Marganai, which is the biggest natural forest in Europe, then if I’m lucky will be eating wild mushrooms with my pasta tomorrow. Oh well off to make my pizza now and enjoy my glass or two of Sardinian wine.
